How many hours of experience do I need to complete for LMHC licensure in New York?
You must complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised experience providing Mental Health Counseling.
How many hours of direct contact with clients are required?
A minimum of 1,500 hours must consist of direct contact with clients.
Can I log and claim hours that are not direct contact hours?
Of the total 3,000 hours required, you may claim up to 1,500 hours of other activities that do not involve direct client contact, including but not limited to, recordkeeping, case management, research, supervision and professional development.
What are the supervision requirements?
An average of one hour per week or two hours every other week of in-person individual or group supervision must be provided in order to claim the hours of experience.
Are there any other requirements/restrictions that I should be aware of?
When an applicant completes less than 3,000 hours in a setting, at least one-half of the hours must be direct at that setting; the remainder may be indirect. It is not acceptable to complete direct and indirect activities in different settings under different supervisors and attempt to combine these hours to meet the experience requirement.
What forms must be submitted to seek licensure?
When submitting your application for licensure you must submit documentation of your supervised experience on the following forms:

- Form 4B – Certification of Supervised Experience
